Sophie Freud - Living in the Shadow of the Freud Family

Date:
Friday, September 28   10:00 AM-11:30 AM

Description:
Dr. Sophie Freud, granddaughter of Sigmund Freud, will visit Grand Valley State University to talk about her life as a member of a famous family and read from her new book, Living in the Shadow of the Freud Family. She is Professor Emeritus of Social Work at Simmons College, School of Social Work in Boston.

She was born in Vienna where as a child she adored her famous grandfather but was separated from him and the Freud family when she moved with her mother to France to escape the holocaust. Her teen years were lived like a game of chess in which she and her mother made move after move involving Paris, Nice, Marseille, Casablanca, Tangiers and Lisbon to evade the German tanks and concentration camps of World War II. Beginning in Vienna and continuing in the United States after 1943, her life with her family of origin is filled with extraordinary challenges which nonetheless reflect the human struggle many people experience.

At 7:00 that evening, she will present a brief talk and reading at Schuler Books and Music, 3165 Alpine NW.

Sophie speaks eloquently, yet modestly, of a life with the name of one of the world’s pivotal thinkers, making her own career in a professional world greatly influenced by her grandfather’s work. She earned a Ph.D. in and taught Social Work, with a specialty in human development, particularly family development, and for many years she had a private counseling practice.

Her current book is masterful in its weaving of material from her mother’s autobiography, her own journal and many family letters into a page-turner of escape and family relationships. All this is focused and punctuated by frequent comments on the primary sources by Sophie’s present voice and the voices of other family members.

To hear Sophie speak at GVSU on September 28, 2007, will put you close to major events in world history, profound intellectual achievement, human drama, and a remarkable achievement in writing.
