Description: By no means is Islam unique with regards to diversity. Every religion across the board shares this quality. However, like other religions, diversity is something that is highly underscored and rarely taken into consideration. The lecture will focus on three aspects of diversity: regional/cultural, religious diversity, and diversity across gender. Through these lenses, the speaker will present the following questions: 1) How do we define a Muslim and how does this fit into the larger Muslim experience? 2) What does the typical Muslim look like and 3) How does this relate to the common misconceptions of Muslims and Islam? Bringing all this together, the speaker aims to challenge the assumptions that are typically held about Muslims and Islam as a whole. |
