SOCIALISM

WHAT IT IS,
WHAT IT IS NOT,
WHY WE NEED IT

Date:
Friday, November 6   5:00 PM-7:00 PM

Description:
The word “SOCIALISM” has returned to the mainstream media because Capitalism is FAILING! Where is THE STUDENT BAILOUT!? STIMULUS MONEY? RELIEF?

--Students: 96,000 Michigan Students statewide lost the Michigan Promise Scholarship
--Workers: 15.3% unemployment rate in MI as of Sep 2009 (comparable to the Great Depression!)
--Families: MI recorded 33,184 foreclosure filings between January and March of 2009 alone

While banks receive BILLIONS, masses of Americans are struggling to make every payment for survival. There are widespread misconceptions about socialism, so its time we discuss the history, philosophy, politics, variations, and genuine meaning of the word. Truly understanding socialism cannot come from the Capitalists in the same way that understanding women cannot come from men. So, why not join some Socialists to discuss why Socialism does not exist today and why we Need it!

**Everyone is encouraged to come with ideas, questions, and concerns to join us for an open and fluid discussion about the socialist alternative.

Speakers to briefly introduce extended discussion:

- Fermin Valle: GV student, socialist political activist, chemistry major
- Kevin Lynch: MSU student and active member of the International -Socialist Organization (ISO), Russian history major
- Anthony Kueppers: GV student, liberal studies major/critical theory
